Homemade vanilla extract is the easiest thing you will ever make…in your life….period! Keep reading to see how simple it is and so much cheaper than store-bought!
Slice the vanilla bean pod lengthwise down the center. Since I was using a mason jar, I cut each pod in half so it would fit nicely.
For every pod you use, you will need 2 ounces of vodka. With my 4 pods, I used 8 ounces of vodka and the cheap stuff works just fine. Alcohol is used to make vanilla because it does not spoil and vodka does not overpower the vanilla bean flavor.
This is what the extract looked like after one week in my pantry. The smell was wonderful when I took the lid off to check it. The plan is to leave the mixture in the pantry for several months while it “steeps”. The minimum time for this to taste the best is one month and I have read about people leaving it up to six months for maximum flavor.
